San Cristobal

San Cristóbal de las Casas offers a unique highland magic where the soul can be easily felt. This colonial jewel, crowned as the ruler of tourism in Chiapas, enchants visitors with cobblestone streets, pastel-colored facades, striking street art, and lively plazas where something always seems to be happening. It has become one of Mexico’s most beloved destinations, and it doesn’t take long for travelers to understand why. Beyond its beauty, San Cristóbal thrives with vibrant indigenous culture, bustling artisan markets, and a welcoming community that makes backpackers and wanderers feel instantly at home. It’s no wonder the government honored it as the king of the pueblos mágicos (magic towns).

Time here is defined by the collision of nature and culture. Adventurers can journey to the famous Sumidero Canyon, a geological wonder dating back to the age of dinosaurs, or immerse themselves in the traditions of Zapatista communities that operate autonomously and celebrate rituals unlike anywhere else—such as the curious practice of drinking Coca-Cola during church ceremonies or the sacrificial offerings of chickens in Chamula. These experiences reveal a living culture that is both fascinating and deeply rooted in history.

San Cristóbal de las Casas is considered one of Central America’s most affordable travel destinations, making it a backpacker’s dream for extended stays and cultural immersion.

The “de las Casas Story”
San Cristóbal was once just one of many towns bearing the name of Saint Christopher, but it gained its distinctive identity through the legacy of Bartolomé de las Casas, a Spanish friar who became one of the earliest defenders of Indigenous rights in the Americas. His advocacy left a lasting mark, and the city’s name was expanded to honor his work. Today, that legacy still resonates, shaping San Cristóbal’s identity as a place of cultural respect, dialogue, and resilience.
