Flores

Floating serenely on Lake Petén Itzá, the island town of Flores enchants visitors with its cobblestone streets, colonial houses, and vibrant waterfront. While the town itself is charming, its true allure lies in being the premier base for exploring Tikal, often hailed as the world’s second most important Maya ruins.

For backpackers, Flores offers far more than ancient history. Los Amigos Hostel has become a hub of adventure, with its popular Sunset Catamaran Cruise to a private beach, while kayaking, lakeside strolls, and wandering the island’s winding alleys add to the laid‑back vibe.

Did you know:

Flores was once the Maya city of Nojpetén, the last independent stronghold of the Itza people. It resisted Spanish conquest until 1697, making it one of the final bastions of Maya sovereignty in the Americas. Today, the island proudly carries this legacy, blending colonial charm with deep indigenous roots.

The “Island Escape” Story
Connected to the mainland by a short causeway, Flores feels like a world apart. Locals joke that crossing the bridge is like stepping into another realm—where colourful houses, lake breezes, and a slower pace of life create an irresistible sense of escape. Many travellers plan to stay just one night, only to find themselves lingering for days
