Semuc Champey

Dive into one of Guatemala’s most breathtaking natural wonders, hidden deep in the lush jungles of Alta Verapaz. Semuc Champeyis a limestone bridge stretching nearly 300 meters above the rushing Cahabón River, which disappears into hidden caves below. At ground level, a chain of turquoise pools glitters like jewels in the forest, inviting travellers to swim, relax, and marvel at nature’s artistry.

For backpackers, Semuc Champey is both playground and pilgrimage. The pools promise hours of serenity, while the caves offer an otherworldly adventure—like stepping into a passageway to the underworld gods.

Shuttles drop visitors in Lanquín, but the real experience begins when you book a stay at Greengo Hostel, a jungle lodge that provides free transport through the thick rainforest and a base for exploring this remote paradise.

Did you know:

The name Semuc Champey means “where the river hides beneath the stones” in Q’eqchi’ Maya. For centuries, the site has been revered as sacred, blending natural wonder with cultural significance.

The “Hidden Bridge” Story
Legend tells that the Cahabón River vanishes beneath the limestone bridge only to reemerge downstream—a mysterious disappearing act that fascinated both the Maya and modern explorers. Today, visitors marvel not just at the shimmering pools but at the geological wonder of a river that seems to vanish into the earth itself

Pro Tip:
Skip the organized tours. Head out early in the morning to wander the pools at your own pace, then look for locals grilling up barbecue lunches in the hills. Many of them offer to guide visitors through the cave. Just be ready to get wet, as the adventure takes you deep into the river’s hidden passageways.
